With the introduction of e-catering services from the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation Limited (IRCTC), the Ministry of Railways of Government of India has decided to withdraw pantry cars primarily from the long routed trains to facilitate more number of passengers.
How does e-catering of IRCTC work?
E-catering is served to those railway passengers who have already booked the option for food during journey with their specified food items at the time of booking their tickets from the source station. The prices for the selected food items are calculated along with ticket fees and collected in advance at the ticket counter itself. While in journey, those passengers receive fresh and hygienic foods from IRCTC by IRCTC officials/staffs. Passengers are free to taste and return foods if thy find some unwanted or bad impression of those foods like staleness, difference in booked foods and the foods served etc. At all unfavorable circumstances, passengers if found correct, will be returned the total amount of their booked foods after a good and complete verification by the TTEs.
Why not pantry car anymore in Indian trains?
Since IRCTC serves in all of the Indian railway stations, there is no need to carry a pantry car along with train. IRCTC can serve fresh cooked foods at the time of breakfast, lunch and dinner to the trains that are scheduled by IRCTC for timings of stoppage for food. In case of delays, wrong delivery and wring bill of foods, passengers are free to give feedback or make a complain through the concerned TTE of their coach/berth or the concerned IRCTC food deliverer.
